I found a retro game store here in Austin which I previously didn’t know about called Game Over Video Games. While I was there I found this cable that allows me to connect my old Sega Genesis to a modern TV set, allowing it to scale and operate normally.
So excited to break out all of my old cartridges, I got everything setup and the first thing I plugged in was one of the greatest games of all time, Herzog Zwei.
Herzog Zwei is one of the original precursors to the modern RTS (real-time strategy) game. There were some RTT (real-time tactical) games but HZ was really the first to fit into the definition we use today.
It was one of my favorite games to play. My cousin, Justin, and I used to battle it out for hours when we were kids.
Recently, the folks over at Carbon Games have developed a new, a re-imaging of sorts, of the game called Airmech. Airmech is and updated version of the HZ play mechanics. Carbon games have added some of the more modern gaming features like varied army leaders, the ability to purchase army upgrades (with real money) and online, team games; but at it’s core the game is the same… only prettier.
