Alternative victory conditions for Epic Armageddon

One of the most common approaches to playing Epic armageddon 4th edition is to engage your opponent for 3 turns then make a mad dash for the objectives in the 4th turn.

These approach my make since for tournament style play but seems silly to me and very unrealistic. Yes I know Epic it’s self is fiction and inherently unrealistic - but I think story-driven games with a strong suspension of disbelief* (Samuel Coleridge’s flavor) are the most fun. 

I feel like Epic games should be more dramatic if objective played significant role in all turns of a game, not just the last. So I’m formulating a series of new approaches to determining victory in Epic Armageddon.

First idea is to count points at the end of every turn. If objectives are worth 1 point then the player earns 1 point per turn in which they control the objective.

This could also be coupled with Epic Space Marine style objective control where once you take an objective you control it until your opponent takes uncontested control. This approach makes me think of the first Dawn of War game where you gain requisition points for controlling strategic points. You continue to control the point even if you do not have any units near it (unless the enemy comes in behind you to take it).

Another part of this idea might be that players don’t simply loose control of an objective just because it becomes contested. Maybe a objective has to be contested for 2 turns before it’s goes back to being “uncontrolled”.

This would basically mean 4 states:

  1. Uncontrolled
  2. Fully controlled by player A or player B
  3. Disputed (one side has control; the other side is trying to take it)
  4. Contested - neither side has control 

Maybe we can even have variable values for objectives based on it’s controlled state:

  • Uncontrolled = 0
  • Fully controlled = 3
  • Disputed = 2 (to the side that had full control)
  • Contested = 1

OR maybe this would be better:

  • Uncontrolled = 0
  • Fully controlled = 2
  • Disputed = 1 (to the side that had full control)
  • Contested = 0
